College Application Process
Selecting a college is a very personal decision and should be based upon what is important to you. Research a variety of schools and narrow down your list to 3-4 schools, which range from "Safe to Dream".
Selecting a college is a very personal decision and should be based upon what is important to you. Research a variety of schools and narrow down your list to 3-4 schools, which range from "Safe to Dream".
- SAT or ACT Test - Take it early (preferrably Spring of Junior year. All schools will accept either test. Make sure to sign up for the Writing section of the ACT. The cost is $58.50 and 47.50 without writing. $ 57.00 for the SAT & $45 without Essay. Fee Waivers are available for students who qualify. Check with the counselor.
- Applications - Visit the college's website. College and university applications are available online and most school prefer electronic filing. In order to be considered for MERIT scholarsihps (FREE MONEY), the earlier you apply the better as many schools in NC have an application deadline sometime in November or early December. Somes additional materials are required, but it's well worth your time.
- Submitting - the student is responsible for application fees (If a student takes the SAT and uses a fee waiver they are eligible for a college application fee waiver (4). Must register and take the SAT. You may send your transcript electronically through CFNC or advise the Data Manager in Student Services.
- Secondary School Report Form - Your counselor completes and sends a recommodation with this form.
- Recommendations - Ask a teacher who knows you well. Give the recommender plenty of time to write your letter of recommendation. A resume to help in the recommendation process is always helpful. By all means thank that teacher/administrator.
- Mid Year Grade Report Form - Will be sent by counselor if required.
- Final Transcripts - Will be sent by Data Manager to the school you have decided to attend and always if you applied through Common Application.
- College Essay - Write about something you know, something that stands out, had a positive impract. Keep the essay upbeat and positive. Tell the truth about who you are and who you are not. Ask a teacher who knows you to proofread your essay and ask their opinion.
NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE
Any student-athlete who is planning on participating at the Division I or II level must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse at https://web3.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp There is a fee. If eligible for a Fee Waiver, counselor will send. In order to gain eligibility through the Clearinghouse one must send ALL of their SAT and/or ACT scores directly to the Clearinghouse. On the SAT/ACT registration, student must select code 9999NCAA Clearinghouse as one of the destinations for scores to be sent. High schools can no longer send the Clearinghouse these scores. You should register for NCAA Clearinghouse during your Sophomore year- no later than Junior Year.

To request transcripts, current and former students should go to CFNC.org and click on Apply → To College → Transcript Manager.
